Macduff is a secondary character in the novel Macbeth by William Shakespeare who proves to be a foil for Macbeth. Macduff is loyal to King Duncan and wants order and fairness to be restored to Scottland. Macduff also has many strengths and weaknesses that can be seen through his choice in Netflix shows.

Law and Order: Special Victims Unit-

The first show that demonstrates Macduff's character is Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. In the criminal justice system, sexually-based offenses are considered especially heinous. In New York City, the dedicated detectives who investigate these vicious felonies are members of an elite squad known as the Special Victims Unit. They capture and try offenders that are particularly disruptive to the societal structure in the United States. This mirrors the morals of Macduff, he is curious and strong with a strong connection to government and the laws and how they form the frame of their society in Scottland. With that in mind, he would respect the characters who are doing the right thing by their country as well as connect with the dangers happening in the show and how they mirror the dangers that were happening in Scottland.

Breaking Bad:

In the show Breaking Bad a struggling High School Chemistry teacher, Walter White is diagnosed with stage three lung cancer. He becomes extremely depressed and ears his family will be unable to survive without the money provided by his job. Being a teacher in rural New Mexico does not exactly bring the cash flow in so he turns to what he knows how to do: chemistry. However, the experimentation he chooses to focus on was that with methamphetamine. White decided to make this drug with the help of one of his former students Jesse Pinkman. While his actions were wrong his motivation was pure, and this is what connects with Macduff. Macduff is protective of his family and wants to do the right thing by them in any way that he can, and this sentiment is exactly why this show appeals to him. These factors would also entice Macduff into watching this show!

Scandal:

In the show Scandal, Olivia Pope is the team leader of a crisis management firm called Olivia Pope and associates. She is the right-hand woman to the current president of the United States and handles any problems that he has or that he may ever have. She is very confident and strong and loyal to the president. Pope is also mostly tracking down people who have done wrong by good people who are good Americans. Much like that of Macduff because he too was loyal to his head of state: King Duncan. When King Duncan was found dead Macduff turned to his son in an attempt to maintain his loyalty to his king and country. Macduff like Pope worries about the state that his country will become overrun with domestic predators roaming around and thus he does everything in his power to protect his country. That is why Macduff would like this show!

West Wing:

This show follows the presidency of Josiah Bartlet and his administrative staff. Josiah Bartlet is a kind man and a respected president of the United States. His staff is loyal and confident in his abilities and follow him almost blindly. With every ruling power comes ups and downs and the downs present in the show go as far as drug abuse and even death but, through it all, the loyalty and confidence that the administrative staff has in regards to their president Josiah Bartlet is a loyalty that is unparalleled. The loyalty that the white house administrative staff has for their president is almost identical to what Macduff had for King Duncan. He was personally distraught when he found out the king was dead and was one of the first to suspect that Macbeth as king would not be the most beneficial for Scottland as a country as well as not believing that Macbeth came into the Scottish crown honorably. Thus he would enjoy this show!

Criminal Minds:

A common problem that shows up in the show Criminal Minds is the idea of revenge. The unknown subjects always have a past that influences their current crimes against the laws of America. The team in this show is known as the Behavioral Analysis Unit of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and they examine the actions of the criminals and find justice using the profile they create from the evidence. Their goal conclusively is to save the innocent and preserve the laws of the United States of America while simultaneously putting away the predators that are proving to wreak havoc on the society of America and put its citizens in danger. This shows the effects of the death of King Duncan on both Macbeth and Macduff. Starting with Macbeth he attacks Macduff by killing his family due to Macduff's over-obvious hesitancy with Macbeth in power. Macduff also travels to England in an attempt to convince Malcolm to rally an army that could overthrow Macbeth. Macduff after finding out about the death of his family feels the need to retaliate in an honorable and well-justified way. The justice and loyalty presented in this show would draw in Macduff's interest in it.

Through these recommendations, we can see the loyal and respectful personality of Macduff. It also highlights the motifs of masculinity that were presented throughout the book Macbeth.

  1. Morrigan- I think all the show choices you picked for Macduff were very fitting for his character. Even though he is a secondary character, you showed good knowledge and understanding of his characteristics and how he is a foil to Macbeth. It was also beneficial that you had a short description of what the show was and then a clear connection to Macduff. Overall really good job:))

  5. Morrigan, great blog! I loved the reference to Law and Order SVU's opening line. The shows you chose for Macduff are really fitting and I really liked your explanations. The West Wing is my favorite show, so I loved seeing it on your list. I think that specifically, Macduff would relate to Leo, who is President Bartlet's chief of staff and is incredibly loyal to the president. I also really liked how you summarized your conclusions at the end, that was great. Awesome job on your blog!

  6. Great job, Morrigan! I love that you chose Macduff because I think he is generally overlooked, even at the end because Malcolm becomes king. Through the shows you picked, I could get a better sense of Macduff's values and motivations. I found it interesting that many of these shows were different but showed a different aspect of Macduff's character, not merely repeating the same message each time. Specifically with Breaking Bad, I really liked how you connected a tv show that would not seem to connect with a moral character by focusing on Macduff's connection to his family.

  7. Morrigan, I really like how you included pictures with each one of the shows as it made it so it was not just a big block of text. Each show you chose highlighted a different aspect of Macduff, some of which I was not even aware of. You did a really great job showing us how we would act and how he acted in the play, in addition to great explanation on why he would choose these shows. Overall, great job!

  8. Hey Morrigan! I enjoyed reading this post, especially since you really broke down the traits of a less-described character in the play. Your recommendations for Macduff all made sense, too. I liked how you focused on the traits that guide his actions at the end of the play, like loyalty to King Duncan, his desire for justice for Scotland and his family, and this idea of the ends justifying questionable means (like murder). Overall, great picks and analysis!

You explicitly connected all of your show selections back to the character you chose and did a great job explaining why Macduff would enjoy each of the shows that you chose for him. Like Kelly said, I like that you focused on Macduff's guiding characteristics and not just his predicted simple interests. Great work!

  12. Hi Morrigan! I enjoyed your blog post due to the unexpected connections you made between Macduff and the shows. When I saw both Criminal Minds and SVU, I thought your analysis would be the same for both but you found interesting ways to differentiate the crime-fighting shows. Your organization was good too by explaining the shows then comparing them to Macduff. The only recommendation is to just re-read because there were some grammar/spelling errors. Good job!

  13. Morrigan!!! This is done really well and I absolutely loved that you chose Macduff because it's different than what the majority went with you. I feel like you added a lot of depth to this post rather than focusing upon the surface level appearance of the character. Each of these shows connected really well to Macduff especially the way in which you explained and described everything. You did a really nice job with not just restating the same things over and over which is something that I struggled with when doing my own post. Really good job girl!!
